Restriction of one cylinder per month removed to benefit consumers; Number of subsidised cylinders will continue to be 12

Currently, the number of LPG cylinders given to a domestic LPG consumer is 12. Alongwith this, there is a restriction of one cylinder per month.

The Government has now decided that while twelve subsidized LPG cylinders per annum will continue to be supplied to all domestic consumers, there will be no separate monthly restriction of one cylinder per month. This changes the earlier decision taken on 28.2.14 and removes the restriction imposed that ordinarily one cylinder be given to each beneficiary every month.

This decision of Government will alleviate difficulties faced by the genuine LPG consumers as the consumption of LPG cylinders is never exactly one per month. This change will meet their genuine requirements subject to their annual entitlement of subsidized cylinders.

Government is contemplating to increase the limit of subsidised LPG cylinders to a household from 6 to 10 per year.
No roll back of decsions on diesel, LPG and FDI, said Finance Minister. But there is a chance, contemplates the option of raising the number of LPG cylinders to be made available at subsidised rates from the current 6 to 10 cylinders per year.
An earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) chaired by Prime Minister had taken the decisions that supply of subsidised LPG cylinders(14.2 kg) per household to six cylinders in a year at the rate of Rs.399 and need of beyond that would have to be paid at the rate of Rs.746 per cylinder.
“Restrict the supply of subsidized LPG cylinders to each consumer to 6 cylinders (of 14.2 Kg) per annum. This will help in reducing the under-recovery by about Rs. 5,300 crore for the remaining part of the financial year. The under-recovery on sale of Domestic LPG during 2012-13, even after this measure, is estimated to be above Rs. 32,000 crore.
Any number of cylinders will be available over and above the cap of 6 cylinders at market rate. The number of subsidized LPG cylinders available to each consumer in the remaining part of the current financial year will be 3 cylinders.While subsidized cylinders will continue to be available at Rs. 399 per cylinder (at Delhi), the market rate of LPG cylinders at non subsidized rates will be notified by the OMCs on monthly basis.”
