The resident doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Sunday called off their hunger strike against improper implementation of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) recommendation.

In a statement issued by the AIIMS Resident Doctors Association (RDA) president, Dr Harjit Singh Bhatti, it was stated that the doctors would now hold a peaceful protest in front of the residence of Union Health Minister J P Nadda, seeking a conversation with him over the issue.

“We have decided to end the hunger strike as the government is not at all concerned about the health of doctors or patients. So we will go to the Health Minister’s residence and will hold a peaceful protest in front of his residence. If he is running away from his responsibilities, then we will run towards him for help,” the letter read.

The resident doctors of the AIIMS had been on a hunger strike for the past three days, but they continued to work, while fasting.

Dr. Harjit Singh Bhatti, in his letter, stated that the government was showing step-motherly attitude only towards the AIIMS, whereas all other autonomous institutes had already been following the 7th CPC recommendations.

“When we raised our concern in front of our administration, they showed their helplessness as the matter of allowances for the AIIMS employees is under consideration by the ministry,” the statement read.

The resident doctors association even wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but hasn’t received any reply thereafter.

“Our hunger strike is now moving to the fourth day, but we haven’t received a single call or tweet from our ministers. They all are busy in the elections and only concerned to get votes in the name of the AIIMS. They are not at all concerned about the grievances related to the doctors or patients at the AIIMS,” the letter further read.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said there might be a few small issues pertaining to implementation of ‘One rank, one pension’ (OROP) scheme, which over time will get automatically addressed.

“OROP as a principle has been accepted, full financial requirements have been fulfilled. There might be a few small issues which over a period of time will get automatically addressed,” he told reporters here.

Parrikar said the issue has more or less been resolved.

“According to me the issue is more or less resolved, have you ever seen that 100 per cent things are fulfilled to everyone’s satisfaction?,” Parrikar said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today made it clear that the armed forces jawans who have had to give up their jobs prematurely would be covered by OROP benefits announced by the government on Saturday. Welcoming the statement the agitating ex-servicemen decided to call off their hunger strike but said would continue their protest till all the “sticky” issues are resolved.

Maj Gen (retd) Satbir Singh, leader of the association leading the agitation, said the protest will continue till four specific points raised by the ex-servicemen are not accepted by the government.

One of them was revision of pension every two years but the government has decided to revise pension every five years.

One Rank One Pension: Meeting of Military veterans with Parrikar inconclusive, threaten to go on hunger strike

The talks between ex-servicemen and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar over the One Rank One Pension scheme failed today after which the retired defence personnel decided to go ahead with their planned rally on June 14 followed by a relay hunger strike to protest the long delay in implementation of the scheme.

“Though Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar understood our problem and argument, he did not give any date for the implementation of the OROP and hence we are going ahead with our agitation,” Maj Gen Satbir Singh, chairman of Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM) told PTI.

He twice led a delegation of ex-servicemen today at meetings with Parrikar and Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag.

Singh said he has complete faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hoped that the OROP will be implemented soon.

The ex-servicemen group has also written a letter to Modi seeking his intervention to meet their long-pending demand.

At a conclave of the retired defence personnel today, it was decided that they will call off their proposed agitation if the Minister gave a deadline of July 15 for the implementation of the OROP.

PM Modi is committed to ‘one rank one pension’ scheme: Defence expert

New Delhi: Defence expert Lieutenant General (retired) Raj Kadyan on Saturday said the one-rank, one-pension (OROP) scheme which has been long pending would be resolved soon.

“The Prime Minister is committed, we have no doubt it will come. Now, it is stuck because somebody is trying to play around with the definition which we had worked out after careful thought. It was very simple, only two parameters were to be taken into account, rank and total service,” Lieutenant General (retired) Kadyan said.

“If you inject anything else which will be neither fair nor will it be easy to implement. So, we are going to sit with the people who have worked it out. Let us see how it is resolved. I have great confidence that we will be able to resolve it,” he added.
